What is Claude Cowork? A plain-English guide
Claude Cowork is a desktop app from Anthropic that lets you hand multi-step work to an AI agent. Where the Claude chatbot answers questions, Claude Cowork carries out tasks: it reads your files, drafts documents, and works through a job step by step while you do something else.
Anthropic released Cowork in January 2026. It runs on your computer and works with the folders you choose to give it access to. You don’t need to write code to use it.
What can Claude Cowork do?
The pattern to look for is work with clear inputs sitting in files and a clear deliverable at the end. Some examples of jobs people hand it:
- Sort a folder of receipts or invoices into a spreadsheet, with totals
- Turn a pile of meeting notes into a status document
- Organize a messy downloads folder into something navigable
- Draft the first pass of a report from a set of source documents
It plans the job, works through it, and shows you the result. You stay in charge of what it can touch and what counts as done.

The first task you give it matters more than people expect. Pick something small and easy to check:
- Give Cowork access to a single folder, one you wouldn’t mind a new assistant rummaging through.
- Ask for something concrete. “Go through these receipts and build a spreadsheet with date, vendor, and amount” beats “help me organize my expenses.”
- Review the plan it proposes before it starts.
- Check the output the way you’d check a new hire’s first deliverable.
That’s the whole loop: scope, delegate, review. Everything else is repetition.
What’s the difference between Claude Cowork, Claude, and Claude Code?

They share the same underlying model. The difference is what you hand them: a question, a task, or a codebase.
How much does Claude Cowork cost?
Cowork is part of Anthropic’s paid Claude plans, and the lineup changes often enough that numbers quoted here would go stale. Check Anthropic’s pricing page for current details.
Where do new users get stuck?
We run Cowork workshops, and the same few things trip people up:
- The first task is too big. “Reorganize all my files” fails; “sort this one folder” works. Trust builds from small, checkable wins.
- Skipping the review step. Cowork proposes a plan before it works. People who read the plan catch misunderstandings early; people who skip it find them in the output.
- Giving it too little context. It can only work with the folders you share. A task about invoices needs the invoices.
- Treating it like chat. Asking Cowork questions works, but it’s the least of what it does. The shift is handing it the task itself.
